About this picture
Bekond Castle

Bekond is a local community in the district of Trier-Saarburg in Rhineland-Palatinate and belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Schweich on the Roman Wine Route .

history

Bekond was first mentioned in a document in 1203. The name "Bekond" probably comes from the Celtic word "Baccune" (watercourse) or the Latin word "Bacca" (berry).

Architecturally and historically, the castle located on the eastern edge of the town should be highlighted (first mentioned in 1653 as a moated castle ), which was owned by the Trier Elector in 1684, who transferred it to Trier Cathedral Provost Karl Kaspar Freiherr von Kesselstatt in 1709 . In 1710 the moated castle was extended by Johann Dekatusch to a three-winged baroque complex including an orangery according to plans by the Electorate court architect Philipp Honorius Ravensteyn . The castle remained in the possession of the Counts of Kesselstatt until 1932. Today it is privately owned along with the farm.

During construction work in the 1980s, old clay water pipes were found that had already supplied the castle and the village well (“Brenn”) with water from the nearby forest “Enscher Busch” in the Middle Ages . The hunting lodge “Enscher Rehhaus” also belongs to the castle.

During the industrialization of Germany, especially in the 1920s, numerous younger people emigrated from the then poorer Bekond, especially to the Ruhr area , as well as to the Saarland and the United States of America . Many former emigrants and their descendants have kept in touch with Bekond to this day.

During the Second World War , French prisoners of war were housed in Bekond and obliged to work in agriculture. In some cases this resulted in friendships and former prisoners visited “their families” after the war. Towards the end of the war in 1945, Bekond was occupied by American troops and some time later by French troops.

Because of the lack of industry, the economic miracle of the 1950s and 1960s initially bypassed Bekond, which was still dominated by agriculture. Because of the medium-sized economic structure, tourism and viticulture, the Bekonder standard of living overtook the industrial regions of Germany since the 1990s.

politics

Saint Clemens village church

The famous parish church of St. Clemens was built in 1827/28. In it there is the built in 1855 and completely restored in 1996 Breidenfeld - organ . According to experts, it is an instrument of high monument value.

Tourism and wine

Numerous vineyards extend from Bekond over a small ridge to the Moselle . Well-known vineyards are the Schlossberg and the Brauneberg .

The place has two hotels and several guest houses . At Bekond there is a golf course of the Golf Club Trier. It was built as a 9-hole golf course in 1981 and expanded to 18 holes in 1997. The clubhouse was inaugurated in 1985.

Bekond can be reached via its own motorway connection on federal motorway 1 .

economy

Bekond traditionally lives from agriculture and viticulture. There are two blacksmiths and other craft businesses in the village , but no manufacturing industry. Therefore, Bekond also serves as a place of residence for employees outside of Bekond, especially in Trier , 20 km away . Outside the village is the Trier region industrial park and a cigarette factory, and a valve manufacturer's factory nearby.

The "Bekonder Krumpernfest" ( potato festival) takes place every two years .
