history

Hentern was already settled in Roman times. Remains of the wall of a Roman house, a so-called villa rustica, were found about one kilometer north of the church .

Hentern was first mentioned in a document in 1000.

Until the end of the 18th century, the place belonged to the Saarburg office in the Electorate of Trier .

After 1792 French revolutionary troops occupied the left bank of the Rhine and after the Peace of Campo Formio (1797) it was incorporated into French territory . In 1798 the then new French administrative structure was introduced, Hentern belonged to the Saarburg canton of the Saar Department . Unlike the rest of the left bank of the Rhine, the canton of Saarburg was initially assigned to Austria at the Congress of Vienna (1815) . In the Second Peace of Paris , Austria ceded the canton to the Kingdom of Prussia with effect from July 1, 1816, along with other areas .

Culture and sights

The Catholic parish church of St. George was built in 1835-1856. The Romanesque west building dates from the early 13th century.

There are two old watermills in Hentern that have been preserved to this day: the Kramesmühle and the Jägermühle. According to tradition, the Kramesmühle has been a ban mill of the St. Matthias Abbey since the 16th century . It got its present appearance mainly through a renovation around 1800.

The only level meter in Hentern is the Ruwer, which was installed on October 1, 1969. It belongs to the Moselle flood reporting center and its catchment area is 102.3 km².

Hentern is located on the disused Hochwaldbahn and had a stop. Passenger traffic was stopped on May 31, 1981, freight traffic on June 2, 1991. On August 10, 1998, the line was shut down and dismantled. Today the former railway line is used by the Ruwer-Hochwald-Radweg .
