Schömerich is a municipality in the Trier-Saarburg district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Saarburg-Kell association.

geography

Schömerich is located south of Trier, about ten kilometers northeast of Saarburg and eight kilometers west of the association headquarters of Kell am See . The federal highway 268 (Trier-Saarbrücken) runs about two kilometers west of the village.

Schömerich also includes the Auf Haider-Pfädchen, Kimmlerhof and Wendelinushof residential spaces.

history

The place was first mentioned in 1574 under the name Schombrig . In the 18th century it was called Schönberg and until the end of the 18th century it belonged to the Saarburg office in the Electorate of Trier .

After 1792 French revolutionary troops occupied the left bank of the Rhine and after the Peace of Campo Formio (1797) it was incorporated into French territory . In 1798 the then new French administrative structure was introduced, Schömerich belonged to the Saarburg canton of the Saar Department . Unlike the rest of the left bank of the Rhine, the canton of Saarburg was initially assigned to Austria at the Congress of Vienna (1815) . In the Second Peace of Paris , Austria ceded the canton to the Kingdom of Prussia with effect from July 1, 1816, along with other areas .

Under the Prussian administration of the place was mayor Zerf in county Saarburg the governmental district Trier allocated to that of 1822 for the Rhine province belonged.

On July 18, 1946, Schömerich, together with 80 other municipalities in the districts of Trier and Saarburg , was annexed to the Saar area , which was separated from the rest of the French occupation zone in February 1946 and which at that time was no longer under the Allied Control Council. On June 6, 1947 this territorial outsourcing was withdrawn to 21 municipalities, so Schömerich came to the 1946 newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate .

In 1962, two coffin-like wooden containers of 3.30 meters in length, probably from the second half of the first century AD, were found in the Schömerich area. In addition to the remains of the corpse fire, additions such as ceramics, black varnish beakers and Roman pottery dishes were discovered.
