Wellen is a municipality in the Trier-Saarburg district in Rhineland-Palatinate . She belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Konz .

geography

Wellen lies in the west of the Verbandsgemeinde Konz, on the Moselle opposite the Luxembourgish municipality Grevenmacher , with which it is connected by a bridge. The place is touched by B 419 and has a stop on the Upper Moselle route .

history

In 646, Wellen is said to have been mentioned for the first time with the Franconian word Vualeheim . The name later changed to Valem, Welem and finally Wellen. The name Wellen may have come from the personal name Wale of a Frankish settler who settled here with his clan. After 1150 the place belonged to Luxembourg , later to the Burgundian , Spanish and Austrian Netherlands .

In 1794 French revolutionary troops occupied the area until 1815 Wellen came to the Prussian province of the Grand Duchy of Lower Rhine (from 1822 Rhine province ) and there to the mayor's office Nittel . In 1878, Wellen received its own station on the Thionville – Trier line . In the Second World War wave was evacuated twice.

On July 18, 1946, Wellen, together with 80 other municipalities in the districts of Trier and Saarburg , was annexed to the Saar area , which was separated from the rest of the French occupation zone in February 1946 and which at that time was no longer under the Allied Control Council. On June 6, 1947 this territorial outsourcing was withdrawn to 21 municipalities again, so waves came to the 1946 newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate .
