Naurath (Eifel)

Naurath (Eifel) is a municipality in the Trier-Saarburg district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Schweich on the Roman Wine Route .

location

The place is located in the Meulenwald , part of the southern Eifel , six kilometers north of the city of Schweich and is connected to the regional road network via the nearby state road 46. Trier-Föhren airfield is located three kilometers to the southeast .

history

In the district of Naurath, traces of Roman foundation walls and bricks were found, which point to a settlement in Roman times . The place name could be derived from nuwe rode (new clearing). In 1569 the place was mentioned under the name Nuwert , later as Nawert .

In 1465 old documents named mines at Nuinrait . Ore was mined here. Today nothing can be seen of the former mining industry. The imperial counts of Kesselstatt administered the place.

Attractions

The former courtyard house in Kirchstrasse dates from the Kesselstatt times . Opposite is a brewery that can be visited. In the center of the village there is a relic from old village life, the well house . An old custom is celebrated here every year: the town's bachelors move to the neighboring village of Dierscheid on the Monday of the fair in November and steal a rooster there, which is renamed the Naurath Cuckoo on the border of the district . He is then celebrated in the village as a new resident and ends up in the cooking pot of the last married couple. Nobody knows the origin of this curious custom.
