Riol is a municipality in the Moselle-Franconian- speaking area in the Trier-Saarburg district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Schweich on the Roman Wine Route .
geography
Riol is located on the right, southern bank of the Moselle between the neighboring towns of Longuich above and on this side and Mehring below and on the other side of the Moselle. The Feller Bach flows into the Moselle at the boundary of Longuich . To the south, about 800 m away, the A1 (Mosel-Saarbrücken section) with the striking “Fellerbachtalbrücke” runs in a wide curve . The single vineyard site "Rioler Römerberg" is located between the locality and the motorway .
history
Riol already made a name for himself in antiquity through the battle of Rigodulum (Celtic origin) described by Tacitus in AD 70, in which the Romans led by Quintus Petilius Cerialis formed a military contingent of the Celtic-Germanic tribe of the Treveri under Iulius Valentinus defeated. The scene of the armed forces were the ridges near Riol, which the Treverians had quickly converted into a bulwark through ditches and stone dams. The steeply sloping part of the mountain range enabled the Moselans to offer resistance for a while. In the long run, however, they could not withstand the overwhelming power of the Romans. By this defeat of the Treverer Trier was abandoned to the winner. Nevertheless, the Romans spared the renegade city. In the period that followed, Roman culture gained more and more influence.
Peter von Aspelt , the kingmaker , was pastor here before he became Archbishop of Mainz .
In 1497 the Riolsburg was first mentioned as the property of Count Sebastian von Sayn. At the beginning of the 17th century the castle belonged to the Husmann von Namedy , who later also called themselves Barons von Riolsburg. The castle became extinct during the Thirty Years War. There are no remains of it.
Parts of a Roman villa can be seen in today's staircase that leads up to the parish church of St. Martin. The church's Romanesque bell tower was built on Roman foundations.
