Taben-Rodt is a municipality in the Trier-Saarburg district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Saarburg-Kell association.

geography

Taben-Rodt is located in the "Saartal-Leukbachtal" core zone of the Saar-Hunsrück nature park . In the south the community borders on the Saarland .

The local community consists of the districts Hamm and Taben-Rodt. The Forstgut Hundscheid, Heidberg, Käsgewann, Lohmühle and Saarhausen residential areas also belong to the Taben-Rodt district.

The so-called Kleine Saarschleife is located near Hamm (in contrast to the better-known [Large] Saarschleife [near Mettlach]) .

history

The town’s landmark is the Michael’s Chapel , built in the 15th century , which provides a view of the narrow Saar valley on a steep rock high above the Saar. The first written mention of Taben can be found in the will of the deacon Adalgisel Grimo from the year 634. This document is the oldest document of the early Middle Ages, the content of which touches on the Rhineland. This makes Taben-Rodt one of the oldest places in the region.

A donation from the Frankish King Pippin from the year 768 brought Taben-Rodt into the possession of the Trier St. Maximin Monastery . The local monks built a "Propstey" on the Saar , the importance of which extended far beyond Taben-Rodt and made the place the religious center of the lower Saar for centuries. Most of the buildings of today's Propstey date from the first half of the 18th century and are now used by the Pallottine Order as a boarding school with elementary and secondary schools and a youth welfare facility.

In the year 769, a large part of the bones of St. Quiriakus is said to have been transferred to Taben. This is where the centuries-old tradition of local Quiriakus worship goes back, which is celebrated through an annual pilgrimage (fair).

The church "Quiriacum ad Attavanum" (St. Quiriacus in Taben) was mentioned for the first time in the will of the Lorraine Countess Erkanfrida in 853, when she bequeathed money to the church. The church fell into disrepair during Bishop Milo's tenure. In 1056, the reconstruction began under Abbot Theodorikus von St. Maximin, also with the support of Emperor Heinrich III. Archbishop Udo (1066-1078) inaugurated the new church. At this celebration the patronage of St. Auctor mentioned in Taben and since then the church bears the current name " St. Quiriacus and Auctor ".

In the 19th century, more than 100 residents of Taben, Rodt and Hamm emigrated to North America and settled mainly in Iowa.

On July 20, 1946, Taben-Rodt, together with 80 other municipalities in the districts of Trier and Saarburg , was incorporated into Saarland , which was separated from the rest of the French occupation zone on February 16, 1946 and which was no longer subject to the Allied Control Council at the time . On June 8, 1947, this French area expansion was withdrawn to 21 municipalities, so Taben-Rodt came to the 1946 newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate .

On March 17, 1974, the previously independent municipality of Hamm (near Taben) with then 50 inhabitants was incorporated into the municipality of Taben-Rodt.
