This also included the six independent municipalities at the time in what is now the municipality of Merzkirchen. On June 8, 1947, this territorial outsourcing was withdrawn again except for 20 municipalities, so the entire current municipal area came to the newly formed in 1946 Rhineland-Palatinate .

Coat of arms of Merzkirchen
Blazon : "In the blue shield a silver church, in the right upper corner in silver the red Electoral Trier cross, in the left upper corner divided nine times by silver and blue."
Founding of the coat of arms: Merzkirchen was re-established as a municipality by state law on March 17, 1974 from the previously independent municipalities of Dittlingen, Kelsen, Körrig, Portz, Rommelfangen and Südlingen.

Martinskirchen, Merteskirchen, Merzkirchen have been the center of the current municipal area for centuries. The old church structure is now also communal. In 1803 all the places mentioned belonged to the parish of Merzkirchen, with the exception of Kelsen, which belonged to Kirf; it came from Kirf to Merzkirchen in 1859.

The place name is a reference to the Martinus Church and is formed from this name. In the form of the talking coat of arms , the Martinus Church stands for the community name Merzkirchen in the coat of arms.

The former communities of Kelsen, Portz, Rommelfangen, Südlingen and a part of Körrig belonged to Kurtrier until around 1800 . For them there is the Electoral Trier cross in the upper right corner of the coat of arms . Dittlingen and the other part of Körrig were under the Luxembourg sovereignty. For them there is the Luxembourg shield in the upper left corner .

St. Martin village church

The Martinskirche gave the village its name. Other historical names of the place were Martinskirchen and Merteskirchen. The church was built in 1848/49 in an east-west direction, the tower stands in front of the western gable wall of the church, the choir with the ribbed vault forms the eastern end, the church is "easted". It was built in place of a previous Romanesque building. The nave with the dimensions 31.8 × 16.6 m is entered through a portal on the south side under the first window. Overall, the interior of the ship is illuminated by four double-lane windows on the north and south sides. On both sides of the ogival passage from the nave to the choir, there are side altars in ogival niches. The retracted, three-sided closing choir has three ogival, two-lane windows. The glass design dates from 1958/59. The subdivision of the choir and nave is made by graded buttresses. On top of the tower is an octagonal bell-shaped storey, which shows arched acoustic arcades in all four directions, which are closed by wooden blinds. Above it, a tall pointed helmet with eight sides can be seen from afar.

The Martinskirche is also on the Way of St. James , section Trier – Perl. This is indicated by a stone with the symbol of the scallop shell .
