The art monuments of the Rhine Province

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The series Die Kunstdenkmäler der Rheinprovinz is the official inventory of art monuments of the Prussian Rhine Province . It was published by Paul Clemen (1866–1947) at the Schwann publishing house from 1891 onwards on behalf of the Provincial Association of the Rhine Province .

Due to the Second World War, some volumes could no longer be published. B. the volume on the secular monuments of the city of Koblenz in the new series Die Kunstdenkmäler von Rheinland-Pfalz , the second half volume for the district of Mayen was not reconstructed until 1985 using the received proofs in the old form and as part of the old series. The volume on the secular monuments of the city of Trier , edited by Hermann Bunjes , was never published and only survived as an unfinished typescript .

The volumes planned as volume 14 on the districts in the newly formed so-called Saar basin area, which had belonged to the Rhine Province since 1815 and were separated from the German Reich by the provisions of the Versailles Treaty, appeared in the same format and also under the supervision of Paul Clemen by Verlag Schwann. Only the main title "Die Kunstdenkmäler der Rheinprovinz" is missing in the external appearance. The two volumes for the city and the district of Saarbrücken (1932) and the districts of Ottweiler and Saarlouis (1934) were published by Walther Zimmermann.

Since the series changed numerous later or z. If, for example, monuments destroyed in the Second World War are dealt with and in many cases no more recent representation is available, it is still indispensable today; a number of volumes were therefore reprinted again in the 1980s . In accordance with the time of their construction, however, buildings from the 19th century (which were not yet considered worthy of monument at the time) are only treated in exceptional cases; Also, types of monuments that were still common back then, but have become rare today (such as originally preserved, typical regional farmhouses) were mostly only mentioned in general.
