Joseph Klinkenberg

Joseph Klinkenberg , also Josef Klinkenberg , (born February 23, 1857 in Aachen , † January 21, 1917 in Cologne ) was a German high school teacher and historian.

life and work

Joseph Klinkenberg, son of the weaver Michael Klinkenberg and Elisabeth Mohné, attended the Royal High School in Aachen, where he passed the Abitur in 1876. He then studied classical philology , philosophy , history and German at the University of Bonn . He was born on December 22, 1880 at Hermann Usener and Franz Bücheler with a thesis on Euripides doctorate .

In 1881/82 he completed his probationary year at the Royal High School in Aachen, where he taught Greek, Latin, Hebrew and French, and after taking the state examination in 1882, he stayed there as a provisional teacher until 1886. On April 1, 1886, he became a permanent senior teacher at the Marzellen-Gymnasium in Cologne , later he was awarded the title of high school professor.

In Cologne, Klinkenberg dealt with the history of the city, especially Roman Cologne . From 1901 to 1904 he was partially exempted from teaching and was able to work on his volume Das Roman Köln , published in 1906 in the series Die Kunstdenkmäler der Rheinprovinz . To this day, this volume represents the basis for any further academic study of Roman Cologne.

His son Johannes Klinkenberg (1887–1959) was also a high school teacher in Cologne and published on ancient Cologne.
