In 1895 Arntz became master builder at the Strasbourg Cathedral , where he stayed until 1902. After his release he went back to the Rhineland and then worked, first in Bonn and later in Cologne, as a freelance architect until his death.

Arntz mainly dealt with sacred architecture and was mainly concerned with the restoration of church buildings. In addition, he also built some mundane residential buildings, mostly in the Rhineland. A well-known example is the twin villa of the brothers Karl and Leopold Bleibtreu built in 1925 in what is now the Oberkassel district of Bonn , one half of which ( Basaltstrasse 18 ) has been preserved.
