St. Johannes Baptist is the Roman Catholic parish church of the city of Nideggen in the Düren district in the North Eifel ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). The church is located directly at the entrance to Nideggen Castle , it is dedicated to John the Baptist .

history

The church was built around 1177. In 1219 the church was donated to the Teutonic Order by Count Wilhelm II von Jülich . In 1282 the Johanniter became the owners, who were responsible for pastoral care in the village. Until 1794 the order provided the pastors.

After a lightning strike in the church tower , the building was significantly destroyed in the Thirty Years' War in 1648 . It was rebuilt in 1657. After a violent earthquake in the 18th century, the restoration was carried out between 1898 and 1900 under the Strasbourg cathedral master builder Ludwig Arntz . During the heavy fighting in the Hürtgenwald during World War II , the north-western part of the church was destroyed. The Nideggen architect Heinrich Lauer directed the reconstruction. The new altar was consecrated on May 31, 1957.

The restored frescoes in the parish church are worth seeing .

The church was entered on March 12, 1987 under No. 66 in the list of architectural monuments in Nideggen . The text of the monument description reads:

An investigation in August 2019 revealed a room under the church that was 3.16 by 3.43 meters deep, in which "there was even room for two sarcophagi". The assumption is that Count Wilhelm IV of Jülich, who was murdered 742 years ago in Aachen, could be buried here.
