detail

The Matthias Chapel is a sacred Romanesque central building near the Oberburg Kobern in Kobern-Gondorf in the Mayen-Koblenz district ( Rhineland-Palatinate ).

Building description

The Matthias Chapel is a hexagonal building with a diameter of around 11 m, to which an almost horseshoe-shaped choir adjoins one of the six sides. The passage is covered by a 24-part rib vault. The tower-like, elevated central building with six-part ribbed vaults towers over the roofs and is supported inside the chapel by six groups of columns.

The mosaic-covered floor is also remarkable .

history

The Matthias Chapel was built around 1220/40 by knight Heinrich II von Isenburg. He had brought the head of the apostle Matthias with him from a crusade and built the chapel on the occasion. The choir was taken over from a previous building that was probably not completed.

Even before 1347 the relic was no longer in the Matthias Chapel. It reached the Trier Cathedral at several intermediate stops until 1420 .

The chapel was sold to Prussia in 1819 and saved from ruin in 1836 by the intervention of the future King Friedrich Wilhelm IV . The chapel was restored again between 1892 and 1894. Buttresses had to be added because of the dilapidation. These could be removed again after the renovation carried out in 1990.

The Matthias Chapel can be visited on weekends in the summer months.

Monument protection

The Matthias Chapel is a protected cultural monument under the Monument Protection Act (DSchG) and entered in the list of monuments of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate . It is located in the Oberburg monument zone with Matthias Chapel .
