The Oberburg Kobern , also called Oberburg or Altenburg , is a hilltop castle above the municipality of Kobern-Gondorf in the district of Mayen-Koblenz in Rhineland-Palatinate .
location
The ruin of the upper castle rises at a height of about 200 meters on a mountain ridge that extends towards the Moselle above the village of Kobern. On the same mountain ridge, about 50 meters below, the Niederburg Kobern rises .
Castle complex
Apart from the late Romanesque Matthias Chapel and the keep , only a few remains of the curtain wall are essentially preserved. The castle complex has a rectangular floor plan and measures around 110 by 40 meters. The ground and upper floors of the approximately 9 by 9 meter square keep are vaulted. The second floor is reached by a flight of stairs in the masonry.
The building adjoining the keep was not erected until 1989.
history
The castle was built on Celtic fortifications at the beginning of the 12th century . It was first mentioned in 1195, when the then lord of the castle gave it to the Archbishop of Trier as a fief.
The Matthias Chapel was built by Knight Heinrich II von Isenburg around 1220/40 to keep the head of the Apostle Matthias as a relic. The castle area was enlarged when the chapel was built. The choir was taken over from a previous building that was probably not completed.
The lords of Isenburg-Kobern kept the castle until the middle of the 14th century. Then it was sold to the Archbishop of Trier and fell into disrepair.
The keep was given an emergency roof in 1936 to protect it from further deterioration. From 1989, today's restaurant was built next to the keep on a site that was originally built on. As part of these measures, the keep was raised and given a new roof.
sightseeing
The castle complex is accessible all year round and can be visited free of charge. A restaurant is now located in the keep and outbuildings. The Matthias Chapel can be visited on weekends in the summer months. The ascent takes place via a narrow footpath, the Way of the Cross through the vineyards, from the Mühlbachtal. There is a parking lot directly below the castle accessible by car.
Monument protection
The Oberburg Kobern is a protected cultural monument according to the Monument Protection Act (DSchG) and entered in the list of monuments of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate . It is located in the Oberburg monument zone with Matthias Chapel .
