Wawern is a municipality in the Trier-Saarburg district in Rhineland-Palatinate . She belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Konz .
location
Wawern is located about five kilometers north of Saarburg and also five kilometers southwest of Konz on state road 137 not far from the Saar . Part of the municipality, the Wawerner Bruch , is designated as a nature reserve.
history
The name Wawern is said to be derived from the Treverian Waberla = swirling swamp meadow, as it still exists today in the Wawerner Bruch.
In the Thirty Years' War the place was almost completely destroyed, the population fell to almost a third, and there were only very few livestock. In 1777 the old town center with the church burned down and in 1814 the whole town, only the winery and the mill were spared. In the lower village, 31 houses were destroyed in another fire in 1872.
Jews were settled in Wawern towards the end of the 18th century . They built their own synagogue around 1839 . On September 2, 1809, the future rabbi Dr. Joseph Kahn was born in Wawern as the orphaned son of the village cantor, destined for the cattle trade, but after a riding accident he devoted himself to his studies. From 1841 chief rabbi in Trier. Died in 1875 while visiting Amsterdam. Around 1870 half of the citizens were Jewish , towards the end of the 19th century there were 70 Jewish citizens in Wawern, and in 1933 there were still 45 Jewish citizens. During the time of the Nazi dictatorship , all parishioners were probably deported and killed.
On July 18, 1946, Wawern, together with 80 other municipalities in the districts of Trier and Saarburg , was annexed to the Saar area , which was separated from the rest of the French occupation zone in February 1946 and which was no longer subject to the Allied Control Council at the time . On June 6, 1947 this territorial outsourcing was withdrawn to 21 municipalities, so Wawern came to the 1946 newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate .

Attractions
The sculpture Meteor by Jürgen Waxweilter was created in 2007 as part of the international sculpture symposium Sculptures on the River .
The community has a historical nature trail, which among other things in the historical center to
- a restored former synagogue,
- a, today profane, former village church,
- various houses from the beginning of the 19th century, some with older building elements,
- a former farm estate built in 1722 by the Trier cathedral chapter and converted in 1919,
- the former wine press house built in 1923 and the former village press

The Wine Blossom Festival takes place on the third weekend in June. Numerous events and exhibitions are held in the former synagogue.
economy
In the past agriculture and viticulture were the main sources of income. Today there are still two Wawerner winemakers who are full-time and a few who are part-time. Foreign vintners have acquired larger areas so that the character of a vintner location is retained. There is also a sawmill, two carpentry shops and other companies. The citizens of Wawerner are craftsmen, employees, civil servants and self-employed.
