Leiwen an der Mosel is a municipality in the Trier-Saarburg district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Schweich on the Roman Wine Route . Leiwen is a state-approved resort .

geography

Leiwen is the namesake of the natural spatial unit of Leiwener Moselle rim heights .

The Leiwenermühle in the Dhron valley and Zummet are districts of Leiwen .

climate

The annual precipitation is 724 mm. The precipitation is in the middle third of the values recorded in Germany. Lower values are registered at 45% of the measuring stations of the German Weather Service . The driest month is April, with the most rainfall in August. In August there is 1.4 times more rainfall than in April. Precipitation varies only minimally and is extremely evenly distributed over the year. Lower seasonal fluctuations are recorded at only 2% of the measuring stations .

history

The place was first mentioned under the name "Lyve" or "Lyue" in a document dated September 1, 802, when Charlemagne had a border description made on the occasion of a donation in favor of the Archbishop of Trier Weomad .

The name of the place probably originated from the Latin word clivus (slope, steepness, uphill road), the path that connected the Roman trade route at Leiwen at the edge of the valley with the road below on the Moselle. The lower Moselweg also gave Detzem its name, as it is the tenth milestone. Above Leiwen, the Zummethöhe offers an impressive view of the Moselle valley on the Trittenheim Moselle loop . Here, Emperor Augustus is said to have built a magnificent villa for his wife Livia as a summer residence, as evidenced by Roman archaeological finds.

The official website of Leiwen contains a different interpretation of the origin of the place name: the wife of Augustus is said to be the namesake. The Leiwen local coat of arms shows, among other things, a coin with the portrait of Livia (58 BC - 29 AD).

  • Half-timbered house Leiwen (Zehnthof). The house built at the end of the 15th century ( dendrochronologically dated 1485/86) was rebuilt in 1558 (year on the second used door post) and 1824 (dating on the lintel), repaired in 1936 and restored in 1976 and 1984. The half-timbered house was still inhabited until 1999 . After renewed renovation to the original character, it now houses a small eatery.
  • Kurtrierer Hof , former estate and seat of the electoral administrator, the Meiers , in Tränkgasse. The portal shows a date of 1610. The courtyard building dates from the Renaissance period. Today there is a winery with a wine bar.
  • Catholic parish church St. Stephanus , built around 1500. Choir, yoke and the end around 1500. Nave and west tower built in 1769 by his brother Andreas according to plans by Johannes Seiz . Furnishings from the time of construction in rich rococo forms. Monstrance around 1460/70. In the crypt you can still see original remains of the Gothic painting from the 16th century.
  • Eucharius Chapel , today a local history and wine museum, first mentioned in 1609, exhibits archaeological finds from bygone eras. A column figure from the 11th century should be emphasized. In the adjoining barn, a complete cooper's workshop, a distillation plant and the path from “grapes on a stick” to “wine in a bottle” (around 1950) can be seen on the ground floor. The excavations of Roman country villas in the area show that this area was already settled in Roman times. In addition, historical photographs document the life of the Leiwen at the beginning of the 20th century.
  • Jewish cemetery , cemetery of the former Jewish community of Leiwen (1592–1938) and Klüsserath. The cemetery is a warning reminder of the former Jewish community in Leiwen, which was a victim of the Nazi tyranny.
  • Leiwen wine fountain , designed by Adolf Herbig from Enkenbach-Alsenborn , donated by the Carl Reh company in 1970 on the occasion of its 50th anniversary. A beautiful fountain with a modern space in the center of the village.

  • Sculpture Park Bohnengarten , a near-natural sculpture park with exclusively domestic plants on 12,000 m².
  • The ' Dhrontalkraftwerk ', put into operation in 1913, is located directly on the Moselle, not far from the town; it is still working. Worth seeing is the Dhrontalsperre located a few kilometers away , the water of which feeds the power plant in Leiwen.

Sports

The local sports club SV Leiwen 1946 (now SV Leiwen-Köwerich 2000 eV) belonged to the Rhineland amateur soccer league from 1971 to 1978 and, with interruptions, to the Oberliga Südwest from 1979 to 1990 .

Regular events

  • The big wine festival with the official coronation of the Leiwen wine queen and her two princesses, the parade and the public wine tasting take place on the third weekend in August.
  • On the first weekend in September, the wine harvest street festival takes place in Römerstraße , where the local winegrowers personally offer their best wines as well as regional dishes typical of the Moselle in many stands.

Economy and Infrastructure

The main branch of the economy is viticulture and its marketing. Tourism is an important source of income. (Year 2009: beds: 2,780, guests: 95,431, overnight stays: 400,790.) Leiwen has two large holiday parks: The Landal Greenpark "Sonnenberg" is a popular destination, especially with families. In 1999 the "Eurostrand Mosel" was opened. Here one has specialized in groups and clubs. After the construction of the “Eurostrand” theme park, Leiwen was able to increase its tourism figures every year. The Moselsteig has been running through the town since 2014 .

Leiwen is characterized by viticulture and with 273 hectares of planted vineyards, after Piesport and Zell, the largest wine-growing community on the Moselle . Traditionally, Riesling is mainly grown. The proportion of white wine grapes is 94.2%. A turning point in Leiwener viticulture came in 1985 through the newly founded association "Leiwener Young Winegrowers". Moving away from mass production to less yield, careful harvest and gentle wine treatment in the cellar were the successful concept. The competition in definition samples is still the most important step towards quality optimization.

In July 2008, Leiwen won the bronze medal in the competition " Our village has a future " in the Rhineland-Palatinate state decision. Since 2011, Leiwen has been advertising with the slogan "Leiwen - a strong piece of the Moselle".
