The Dhrontalsperre in the valley of the Kleine Dhron near Heidenburg and Leiwen in Rhineland-Palatinate was built between 1911 and 1913 by the Trier municipal utility to generate electricity . The water was directed to the Moselle near Leiwen in order to generate electricity from hydropower in turbines . In 1954/1956 there was an expansion to the pumped storage plant (Dhronkraftwerk Leiwen), which pumps water up at night and generates electricity during the day. The pump was dismantled in 1995, since then the natural inflow of the Kleine Dhron has been used exclusively as head water. The operator is RWE Power AG .

Barrier structure

The barrier structure of the Dhrontalsperre is a gravity dam made of quarry stone with a curved floor plan. It is a dam based on the Intze principle and also has an Intze wedge. The dam was renovated from 2005 to 2006 and has a drainage tunnel ( inspection passage ) with associated drainage and an underground seal ( sealing curtain ).

Flood relief

The top of the wall is designed so that it can be flooded . The ridge on the top of the wall is divided into twelve fields by intermediate pillars. The overflow edges of the two outer fields are arranged lower than the other eight central fields. The overflowing water is directed into the stilling basin via the cascades arranged on the slopes . An approximately 5 m wide bridge is arranged on the intermediate pillars.
