The RWE Power AG is the 100% subsidiary RWE -Konzerns essentially opencast mines and power plants of the Rhenish lignite mining area as well as nuclear power plants operating in the Group. The seat is in Essen and Cologne. Chairman of the board is Dr. Frank Weigand.
In the context of the discussion about the coal phase-out and in particular about the clearing of the Hambach Forest planned by RWE , strong criticism of the Group's practices was loud.
history
The company was founded in 2000 after RWE took over Vereinigte Elektrizitätswerke Westfalen (VEW). In the course of the merger, RWE merged the power plants of its subsidiary RWE Energie AG (i.e. all RWE power plants with the exception of lignite) with the power plants of VEW in the new subsidiary RWE Power . In 2003, the RWE subsidiary RWE Rheinbraun, with all power plants, opencast mines and other facilities, was absorbed by RWE Power.
By outsourcing to its own company, RWE prepared the unbundling of the business along the value chain of electricity generation, transport, distribution and sales, as has been increasingly demanded by politicians since the 1990s with the aim of liberalizing the energy markets.
After the merger, RWE Power and its subsidiaries had more than 20 large power plants and numerous smaller plants with a total power generation capacity of more than 30 gigawatts . In 2004, RWE was the largest electricity supplier in Germany in terms of the amount of electricity generated (the majority of which was accounted for by the subsidiary RWE Power ).
At the beginning of 2013, RWE Power was organizationally assigned to the newly founded RWE Generation . In this company, all conventional electricity generation companies in the RWE Group, which are located in Great Britain, Benelux and Germany in particular, have been bundled. In the course of this reorganization, RWE Power handed over its gas and hard coal power plants to RWE Generation SE, which from now on operates them itself.
RWE Power AG has been a direct subsidiary of RWE AG again since 2019 .

In particular, RWE Power AG operates the facilities (power plants, open-cast mines , railway systems, waterworks, etc.) of the Rhenish lignite mining area and the RWE Group's nuclear power plants . In addition, RWE Power also operates some hydropower , waste and biomass power plants , some on behalf of partners.
Before 2013, hard coal and gas power plants were also part of the RWE Power portfolio ; When it was founded in early 2013, RWE Power handed over these systems to the former parent company (now sister company) RWE Generation .
criticism
RWE Power AG , together with RWE Holding, as the operator of large power plants and opencast mines, is often criticized because of the negative consequences for the environment, nature and local residents. The criticism particularly concerns the
- Operation of nuclear power plants , because of the safety risks of operation and the radioactive waste generated as a result ,
- Operation of fossil power plants, which are considered harmful to the climate and health due to the emission of emissions, in particular air pollutants and carbon dioxide .
- Operation of large open-cast mines due to the devastation of the landscape with natural biotopes, cultural monuments and localities, mountain damage, lowering of the groundwater level, etc. (see Hambach open-cast mine ).

Critics accuse RWE Power of sticking to outdated technologies despite known risks and problems and of investing too little in the expansion of sustainable, renewable energies . Further allegations in this context are greenwashing , excessive lobbying and interdependence with politics ( “felt” ).
