history

It is not known when the Jewish cemetery in Leiwen was established. The approximately 50 tombstones ( mazewot ) still preserved today are from the period between 1863 and 1933. Not only the dead of the Jewish community in Leiwen , but also the Jewish community in Klüsserath, were buried in the cemetery. Likewise, until 1898/99, the dead of the Trittenheim Jewish community , which then built its own Jewish cemetery .

The cemetery was partially destroyed during the National Socialist era and restored as much as possible after 1945.

The following text is written on the information board on the right pillar of the cemetery entrance: Cemetery of the former Jewish communities of Leiwen (1592-1938), Klüsserath and, for a time, of Trittenheim. After destruction in the Third Reich, approx. 50 reconstructed tombstones from the period from 1863 to 1933 with Hebrew inscriptions and some German names repeated. Simple, rounded steles made of red sandstone predominate . Obelisks and stones with obelisk tops have also appeared since the end of the 19th century . The cemetery is the lasting and admonishing memory of the former Jewish community in Leiwen, which was a victim of the National Socialist tyranny .
