The Jewish cemetery Freudenburg is an old burial place of the Jews in Freudenburg , a local community in the district of Trier-Saarburg in Rhineland-Palatinate . The Jewish cemetery is located about 200 meters north of the market square on Maximinstrasse.

history

The Jewish cemetery in Freudenburg, which was probably laid out as early as the Thirty Years War , was first mentioned in a document in 1684 .

The dead from the surrounding towns were also buried in the cemetery: until 1748 from Brotdorf , Hilringen and Merzig . Longer from Kirf , Könen and Meurich .

After two extensions (around 1860 and around 1900) the cemetery has an area of ​​35.44 acres . Today there are still 118 tombstones ( mazewot ).

Desecrations

In 1917 and 1919 the cemetery was desecrated and tombstones were knocked over or smashed. The cemetery was also desecrated during the Nazi era and further damage was caused by grenade strikes during World War II . After 1945 the cemetery was restored.
