Könen is located on the Saar and is a district of Konz on the Moselle in the Trier-Saarburg district in Rhineland-Palatinate .

The village has approx. 2275 inhabitants (as of 2008) and in 1970 still had a wine-growing area of approx. 16 hectares. The cultivated areas had decreased to a few hectares by 2005. Könen is on federal highway 51 . Könen, formerly an independent municipality, was incorporated into the city of Konz on November 7, 1970 as part of the administrative reform in Rhineland-Palatinate. Archaeological finds have shown that Celts and Romans have already settled in the area. First recorded mention was in 980 as Kona.

History of the Jews

A 258-page book on the history of the Jews of Könen was published in November 2005 for the Konz-Könen district . It provides information about the times of peaceful coexistence between Jews and Christians as well as the destruction of the Jewish community in Könen during the Nazi era . Photos of people and documents illustrate the eventful history of a fairly large Jewish community. Contemporary witness reports on the fate of individual Jewish families convey how the victims learned about the anti-Jewish measures taken by the National Socialists. The book written by Willi Körtels was published by the Förderverein Synagoge Könen e. V.
