Former synagogue in Könen

The synagogue in Könen , a district of Konz in the Trier-Saarburg district in Rhineland-Palatinate , was built in 1905. The secular synagogue is on Reiniger Strasse.

history

A first synagogue was built in Könen around 1790. It was canceled around 1900 due to dilapidation . In 1905 the new synagogue was built in its place with a length of ten meters (east-west) and a width of 6.5 meters. The high arched windows were characteristic of the church. The interior was covered by a barrel vault, which was probably painted. The women's gallery was on the west side.

During the November pogrom in 1938 , the synagogue was demolished by SA men. The building then stood empty for a few years and came into private ownership in connection with the restitution proceedings in 1955. The new owner converted the synagogue building into a barn or warehouse. A false ceiling was put in about 50 cm below the height of the no longer existing women's gallery. Inside, the place of the Torah shrine and the arched windows can still be seen today .
