synagogue

The synagogue was built between 1830 and 1850 in Wagnergasse (today's Scharzbergstrasse). It was a rectangular building. The entrance in the form of an arched portal and two arched windows were located on the western gable side. There was a rose window in the gable . There were also arched windows in the side walls. A door led into the prayer room from the anteroom. On the right a staircase led to the women's gallery . The Torah shrine was in the rear part of the building. During the November pogroms in 1938, the interior was destroyed and the windows thrown in. The building was otherwise completely preserved. In 1943 the municipality of Oberemmel bought the building for 1,000 Reichsmarks . After 1945, after the purchase contract had been canceled by the Chamber of Reparations in 1945, the building went into private ownership and was used as a barn. The building was then demolished in the 1960s due to its dilapidation.

Jewish community of Oberemmel

A Jewish resident in Oberemmel was mentioned in a document as early as 1662. The number of members of the Jewish community rose slowly until it reached its peak in 1901 with 55 members. The community had its own religious school. The deceased were buried in the Jewish cemetery in Oberemmel. With the seizure of power of Adolf Hitler in 1933, the repression intensified against the Jewish inhabitants of Oberemmel. Before the November pogroms in 1938, three families had already emigrated. The remaining Jewish residents left Oberemmel by the end of 1938.
