The synagogue in Leiwen , a community in the Trier-Saarburg district in Rhineland-Palatinate , was a synagogue that was built in 1912/13 and devastated during the November pogroms in 1938 . The synagogue was located on Römerstraße on the current site of the Reh Kendermann company .

history

The Jewish community in Leiwen owned a prayer room on the corner of Euchariusstraße / Laurentiusstraße (previously the corner of Bahnhofstraße / Hannagass) until 1913. In 1910 the Jewish community bought a piece of land at what was then the end of Römerstrasse and from 1912 built a synagogue based on the plans of the Trier architect Jacob Reiter . The inauguration took place on July 11th and 12th, 1913.

During the Nazi era , the synagogue was devastated on November 10, 1938 by SS men and party members of the NSDAP from Leiwen. The Jewish residents of Leiwen were driven to the banks of the Moselle and forced to burn the Torah scrolls , vestments, books, candlesticks and candles.

The building was used as a kindergarten until July 1940 and then as a prisoner of war camp . After 1945 the synagogue was sold to the Carl Reh company, which initially used it as a warehouse and had it demolished a few years later. There is no memorial plaque .

architecture

The free-standing historicizing quarry stone building had an entrance facade with corner pilasters and a stepped frieze . In the top of the gable was a Star of David and underneath a round window. There were also round windows on the long sides in the upper part and coupled twin windows with round arches in the lower part. A stairwell was built on the northern long side to access the women's gallery. The lunette portal with double-leaf coffered door , the entrance for the men, led into an anteroom and then into the prayer room. To the right in the anteroom was the door to the classroom, where religion and Hebrew were taught.
