The synagogue in Butzweiler , a district of the Newel community in the Trier-Saarburg district in Rhineland-Palatinate , was built in 1892.

history

The synagogue stood with the east gable facing Ramsteiner Weg. The synagogue site was surrounded by a half-height wall on which an iron grille was attached. The gable roof building was a simple rectangular body with a sloping roof made of sandstone quarry masonry that was plastered and whitewashed.

The round and arched windows were made of sandstone. A circumferential, slightly recessed plinth made of sandstone and a profiled eaves cornice divided the building. At the corner of the building on the west and north side, the Jewish school with the teacher's apartment was attached.

The west elevation was symmetrically structured, steps led to the two-winged portal with skylight. In the anteroom to the left of the entrance there was a wooden staircase that led to the L-shaped gallery . The sacred space was vaulted by a barrel-shaped ceiling.

time of the nationalsocialism

During the November pogrom in 1938 , the synagogue was desecrated by SA men from Trier and local residents and its interior was destroyed.

Before the former synagogue building was converted into today's residential building, it had different uses.

There has been a memorial plaque on the street side since 1988.
