history

1802-1945

Printing and publishing house 1802–1879

In 1802 Theodor von Zabern (1771–1832) bought the Societas typographica printing company from Johann Andreas Crass in Mainz, with the associated book warehouse and the privilege of prefectural book printer . In the following year, the second volume of the Ancient History of Mainz by Father Joseph Fuchs was published as the first archaeological publication. In 1812 von Zabern acquired the newspaper privilege to publish and print the Mainzer Zeitung from the Mainzer Rochushospitals-Druckerei. This formed the economic basis of the publishing house until 1851.

After his death in 1832, the older son Karl Theodor von Zabern (1807–1862) took over the printing company and supported progressive ideas in Mainz in the following decades. The younger Victor von Zabern (1810–1880) took over the publishing house and ran it until 1878.

Printing works 1879–1945

From 1879 Philipp von Zabern (1849–1902), the son of Karl Theodor, headed the printing company until 1902.

Since 1945

From around 1952 there was a new publishing house, Philipp von Zabern, which still exists today. The specialization in topics of archeology and ancient cultures took place after the Second World War . Franz Rutzen was the owner of the publishing house from 1960 to 2001 ; During this time the greatest success was achieved: the catalog for the Tutankhamun exhibition in Berlin, Hamburg and Munich in 1980/81 sold over 1.5 million copies.

In 1993 Rutzen sold the Zabern publishing house to the Axel Springer publishing house . In 2003 Springer dissolved its book division and sold von Zabern to Valiva AG , a holding company in Zurich . From 2005 Zabern-Verlag belonged to the WBG in Darmstadt , where it was initially continued as an independent GmbH . From 2002, Annette Nünnerich-Asmus was managing director; on July 1, 2010 she was followed by Jürgen Kron, the former head of Societäts-Verlag .

In order to save costs, the publishing house left its headquarters in Mainz at the end of 2010 and moved to Darmstadt , in the publishing building of its parent company WBG . On January 1, 2014, Philipp von Zabern lost his status as a publisher and has since been an imprint of the WBG , like its sister publisher Theiss since July 1, 2013 .
