The Tutankhamun exhibition was shown in five major German cities in 1980 and 1981 and is still one of the most popular art exhibitions in German history. Patrons were Anwar el-Sadat , then President of the Arab Republic of Egypt , and Karl Carstens , then Federal President .

It showed 55 original pieces from the tomb of the Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun , which corresponds to about one percent of the total treasure of the pharaoh that was found in the burial chamber. The majority of the exhibits came from the Egyptian Museum in Cairo .

The exhibition attracted an audience of millions; They saw over 600,000 visitors in the Hamburg Museum of Art and Crafts alone , the last stop of the traveling exhibition.

The catalog for the exhibition appeared in Publisher Philipp von Zabern and sold over 1.5 million copies.
