John Boardman
Sir John Boardman (born August 20, 1927 in Ilford ) is a British classical archaeologist .
Life
John Boardman was a student at Chigwell School and a student at Magdalene College , Cambridge . He spent several years in Greece , including from 1952 to 1955 as the second director of the British School at Athens . He carried out archaeological excavations in Smyrna , Crete , Emborios in Chios and Libya . In 1955 he was assistant custodian (Assistant Keeper) at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford for four years , then Lecturer in Classical Archaeologist and Fellow at Merton College , Oxford. Boardman taught from 1978 to 1994 as Professor of Classical Archeology ( Lincoln Professor of Classical Archeology and Art ) at Oxford University . He has been retired since 1995 .
His archaeological research is mainly focused on Greek art , particularly glyptics , sculpture, and vase painting .
Boardman is a member of the British Academy , an honorary member of the Royal Irish Academy , an associate member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres (1991) and a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences (1970) and the Academy of Athens (1997). In 1999 he was accepted into the American Philosophical Society . Boardman is also a member of the editorial committee of the Lexicon Iconographicum Mythologiae Classicae and the Thesaurus Cultus et Rituum Antiquorum . In 1989 he was raised to the non-hereditary nobility ( Knight Bachelor , Sir ).
