The Royal Irish Academy ( Royal Irish Academy , abbreviated RIA , Irish Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann ) is a non-governmental academy of sciences in Dublin , Ireland . It is a member of the All European Academies and was established in 1785. The academy currently has around 420 members and aims to support research and learning in the scientific field. One means of doing this is to set up national committees on specific subject areas in order to create a strategic forum for discussion. Anyone who has achieved outstanding performance in their field can become an honorary member. Elected membership is also possible. This requires the person to be Irish Resident and 5 members of the Academy must agree to be accepted.

The academy is also active as a publisher, e.g. B. the magazine Ériu . It also has an extensive library, including Thomas Moore's personal library .
