history

The bankers Leopold Sonnemann and Heinrich Bernhard Rosenthal founded the Börsenblatt Frankfurter Geschäftsbericht on July 21, 1856 in Frankfurt am Main . In the course of the following decade, the four-page sheet developed into the “Frankfurter Zeitung”, which over the years has become a national daily newspaper with a worldwide reputation. It appeared in the Frankfurter Societäts-Druckerei, which was founded in 1860, until August 10, 1943, when, at the instigation of the Nazis, the company was discontinued. Because of its international reputation, the Frankfurter Zeitung continued to appear after 1933, although the Nazi rulers did not like it. The Frankfurter Illustrierte was published at the same time .

Sonnemann showed great openness to technical progress: as early as 1863 he bought two two-cycle presses for newspaper printing, the first of its kind in Germany. In 1879 he had one of the first Augsburg rotary presses installed.

In 1921 the Societäts-Verlag was founded as a book publisher for the Frankfurter Societäts-Druckerei with a focus on economic issues, history and politics.

After the end of the war, the American military government appointed the publishing merchant Werner Wirthle as trustee of the Frankfurter Societäts-Druckerei in 1946, who rebuilt the FSD as a modern publishing company.

In 1958, the Frankfurter Societäts-Druckerei bought the Frankfurter Neue Presse and relocated its entire business to Frankenallee in Frankfurt's Gallus. At the same time, she took over shares in Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung GmbH and received the printing order for the FAZ from her

In 1978, FSD took over shares in Westdeutsche Verlag und Druckerei GmbH and, starting in 1979, upgraded its own production in the long term: all rotary magazines were converted from lead to photo typesetting and from letterpress to offset printing. In 1985, investments were made in the expansion of the printing plant and the associated processing.

A year later, lead type was switched to a computer-controlled editing, advertising and production system. In 1993 the FSD inaugurated its new, ultra-modern printing center in Mörfelden-Walldorf, thereby setting international standards. In 2001 the subsidiary of FSD, the Süddeutsche Societätsdruckerei , was founded in Maisach , Bavaria . The printing site was given up on December 31, 2014.

In 2011, Frankfurter Societäts-Druckerei GmbH repositioned itself in three new companies for the future (Frankfurter Societäts-Medien GmbH, Frankfurter Societäts-Druckerei GmbH and Frankfurter Societät GmbH) With this step, the media company is revising the appearance of its companies and business areas.

The business book publisher Frankfurter Allgemeine Buch has been publishing under the umbrella of Frankfurter Societäts-Medien GmbH since 2013. Also in the same year the Holding Frankfurter Societät took over the Frankfurter Rundschau GmbH together with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

In 2015 the media group Frankfurter Societät bought the trademark rights and the subscriber base of the Rüsselsheimer Echos, thereby expanding its newspaper business south of the Main.

Frankfurter Societäts-Medien GmbH has been the Frankfurt media group since mid-2017.
