Wolff & Sohn, he is the majority owner of newspaper holding Hessen .

Life

Dirk Ippen is the son of the businessman and former WAZ co-publisher Rolf Ippen and his second wife Käthe Ippen. After graduating from the Burggymnasium Essen , Ippen began studying law in Freiburg in 1960 , which he continued in Hamburg and Münster and graduated with the first state examination in 1963 ; In 1967 he received his doctorate. jur.

Ippen soon concentrated on an expansion strategy based on his parents' publishing house, the Westphalian Gazette in Hamm. He acquired small to medium-sized sheets mainly in southern Germany and Lower Saxony; He is also represented with some daily newspapers in the new federal states. In 2002 Ippen acquired the Dierichs media company in Kassel against a minority stake in his publishing group. I.a. also the Hessische / Niedersächsische Allgemeine , which appears in northern Hesse and southern Lower Saxony. This acquisition caused quite a stir in the media world. The previous owner - the Dierichs Group - had recently acquired the majority shareholding in MB-Media Verlag. MB-Media publishes most of the advertising papers in Northern Hesse, once a strong print competitor in this region due to the classifieds and advertising market. When the Dierichs family sold the publishing house to Ippen, MB-Media went to the Nord-Ost-Hessen (AZGN) advertising group - which is run by Ippen's nephew Daniel Schöningh. Despite the monopoly position achieved as a result , this approach was not objected to under antitrust law.

The newspapers that he wholly owns or in which he holds a substantial portion of the capital include, among others:

In addition, there are over 20 advertising newspaper publishers with almost 100 advertising newspapers with a weekly circulation of more than five million copies and print shops. The advertising newspapers mostly appear in the publication area of a daily newspaper run by Ippen.

After the fall of the Wall, Ippen campaigned for the establishment of the Oranienburger Generalanzeiger , which was sold to the Märkische Oderzeitung in Frankfurt (Oder) with effect from January 1, 2011, including the Märker and Brandenburger Wochenblatt advertising newspapers .

Ippen is also directly and indirectly involved in electronic media and internet portals . In 2003 Ippen founded ISA GmbH & Co. KG together with the Holtzbrinck publishing group and the WAZ media group, and in 2008 it was renamed Markt Gruppe GmbH & Co. KG . This holding company specializes in advertising portals on the Internet and operates the advertising portal Markt.de , among other things . He also has a majority stake in the local news website "LocalXXL.com".

Ippen also holds shares in two telephone directory publishers in Baden-Württemberg. In recent years he has increasingly placed relatives in important positions in the publishing group. They often hold their own media shares in order to avoid antitrust or competition law problems. Dirk Ippen has meanwhile left half of his publishing group to his nephew Daniel Schöningh, the long-time employee of the Dr. Harald Brenner and transferred to his eldest son, Jan Ippen. In 2006 he founded Ippen Digital GmbH & Co. KG, which developed software to operate all portals of the Ippen Group with a uniform content management system. In 2011 he founded Ippen Digital Media GmbH. The specialist agency for digital content develops content strategies for companies and creates Internet texts.

At Westfälischer Anzeiger in Hamm, Ippen was at times managing director and publisher as well as editor-in-chief . He maintained a kind of web log in which he collected columns that had previously been printed in several of his newspapers. In the texts, which now only appear in the newspapers, Ippen represents market-liberal and socially conservative positions. The title of the Ippen blog - it was "How I see it" - has not been continued since the end of 2007.

A subsidiary of the Westfälischer Anzeiger is the Westfälische Werbegesellschaft für Privat Rundfunk (WWR), to which the local broadcasters Radio Lippewelle Hamm , Hellweg Radio , Radio MK and Radio Kiepenkerl belong.

In addition to his stakes in newspaper publishers, Dirk Ippen has acquired ownership of book publishers. Among other things, he has owned the art book publisher Hirmer since 2011 .
