Maria Radnoti-Alfoldi
Maria Radnoti-Alföldi , often just Maria R.-Alföldi , (born June 6, 1926 in Budapest ) is a German provincial Roman archaeologist and numismatist of Hungarian origin .
Radnoti-Alföldi grew up as the only child of the doctor Geza Alföldi and his wife Olga in Budapest. After graduating from high school in 1944, she studied at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Budapest until 1949 . In 1947 she married the archaeologist Aladár Radnóti (1913–1972) and worked at the Hungarian National Museum until 1957 . From 1950 she received a teaching assignment for an exercise in the winter semester at Budapest University. After the suppression of the Hungarian uprising , she and her husband fled to Bavaria via Vienna in 1957 . From 1957 to 1962 Radnoti-Alföldi worked in Munich as a research assistant in the research project “ Fund coins of the Roman era in Germany ” (FMRD) of the German Research Foundation . In the summer semester of 1961 , she qualified as a professor at the University of Munich in the newly planned subject “ Ancient Numismatics ”. However, in 1962 she followed her husband to Frankfurt am Main , who received a professorship at the University of Frankfurt for the two subjects of auxiliary sciences in antiquity and the history and culture of the Roman provinces . After Aladár Radnoti's early death in December 1972, she took over his professorship in 1973. Until her retirement in 1991, she taught as a professor at the Department of Greek and Roman History, Department II (today: Department II of the Institute for Archaeological Sciences ), the subjects of archeology Roman provinces as well as auxiliary sciences of antiquity .
Radnoti-Alföldi is a specialist in the field of ancient numismatics. The focus of her research lies in the areas of found coin analysis, Roman history and the self-portrayal of the emperors. She headed the Greek Mint of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and, with Hans-Markus von Kaenel, the Fundmünzen der Antike (FdA) project of the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz . She was responsible for many volumes for the Fundmünzen der Antike project . She is a member of the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz and a full member of the German Archaeological Institute . Her scientific work has been recognized internationally, including the Medal of the Royal Numismatic Society , London (1995), the Archer M. Huntington Medal of the American Numismatic Society , New York (2000); Honorary membership of the Austrian Numismatic Society , the Société Française de Numismatique , the Commission Internationale de Numismatique , the Hungarian Numismatic Society and the Hungarian Society for Antiquity Research. In 1992 Radnoti-Alföldi was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany .
