Austrian Numismatic Society

The Austrian Numismatic Society , based in Vienna , Austria , was founded in 1870 and is aimed at collectors , dealers and scientists with the areas of interest coins , medals , tokens , brands and calculating pennies . The offer is aimed at enthusiasts of all ages , from ancient times through the Middle Ages and modern times up to the present .

founding

The Austrian Numismatic Society was founded on March 19, 1870 in Vienna under the leadership of the orientalist Josef von Karabacek, the numismatist Arnold Luschin von Ebengreuth and the curator at the Imperial Coin and Antique Cabinet Friedrich von Kenner .

Since 1942, the company has been based in the building of the Austrian Mint , the former main mint .

The current president is Günther Dembski , the office of vice-president is Dietmar Spranz.

Members

The society has almost 400 members from Austria and beyond.

In addition to regular social evenings, lectures, exhibitions and study trips are offered. There is also an extensive specialist library available to members.

Publications

In addition to lectures, the main activity of the society is the issuing of scientific publications. On the one hand the numismatic. Magazine that has been published since 1869. On the other hand, the communications of the Austrian Numismatic Society (MÖNG), in which scientific articles, book reviews and reports on current research projects in numismatics and the closely related related disciplines are published. This publication has been published under various titles since 1883, nowadays it is self-published twice a year by the company. There is also a news bulletin.

Medals of Honor

Since 1958, the Eckhell Medal has been awarded at irregular intervals to people who have rendered outstanding services to numismatic science or to deserving functionaries of society.

In 1979, the carpenter's medal was awarded for the first time , honoring people who have made a special contribution to society or who have distinguished themselves for special achievements in the numismatic field.
