Albert Stuwe (born March 16, 1921 in Ennigerloh ; † April 14, 1998 there ) was a German draftsman, graphic artist, painter and poet.

Life

After an apprenticeship as a painter, Albert Stuwe attended evening classes at the Münster School of Applied Arts with Bernhard Bröker in 1939. In 1940 he was drafted into the Wehrmacht. After a short period of imprisonment, he returned to Ennigerloh, where he resumed his artistic activity. In 1946 he traveled to Düsseldorf to attend an etching course with Otto Coester at the art academy. In 1948 Albert Stuwe joined the Free Artist Community Schanze in Münster and in 1951 received the 2nd prize “Young Westphalia” for graphics. In the same year he married Marianne Westermann (1926–1989), and the children Peer Christian, Thomas and Susanne emerged from the marriage.

In 1953 Stuwe was one of the founding members of the Beckum-Warendorf district art association, and in 1960 he joined the "Neue Gruppe Münster 60". After separating from his wife, he married the sculptor Edith Kessler (1931–1986) in 1970. From 1990 until his death he lived with the painter Helga vom Weg. Until recently the artist went on study trips, a. a. to Norway and France to paint there in nature.

Albert Stuwe's grave is located in the Ennigerloh municipal cemetery.

Works

Albert Stuwe created drawings, graphics and paintings. Since the late 1950s, commissioned works have also been created for private and public buildings, including murals, mosaics and glass windows.

His works have been shown in solo and group exhibitions at home and abroad. The artist's works can be found in numerous private and public collections, such as the Liesborn Abbey Museum in Wadersloh, which holds a bundle of over 250 drawings from the Scheiwe-Löer private collection. Theodor Scheiwe, a timber and building materials dealer from Münster, had already made the acquaintance of the artist in 1948 and encouraged him through regular purchases of his works.

In terms of style, Albert Stuwe's drawings and paintings are close to fantastic realism, with the artist creating an individual repertoire of symbolic motifs that has been constantly varied and expanded. His subjects included surreal landscapes, grotesque figure images and apocalyptic dream visions. Many of his works can be understood as existential symbols and problematize the relationship between man and nature. In addition, numerous self-portraits were created.

Albert Stuwe was also active as a poet from an early age and published a number of volumes of poetry.

Circle of friends and catalog raisonné

In order to research the artist's work and to preserve his memory, the Freundeskreis Albert Stuwe eV was founded in 1998, based in Ennigerloh. On his initiative, a catalog raisonné has been created for several years now, which now includes more than 1000 works by the artist and has been publicly available as a digital database since January 2017.
