The Liesborn Abbey Museum is a museum for art and cultural history in Liesborn in the Warendorf district . It is located in the baroque abbey residence of the former Liesborn Abbey of the Benedictines in Liesborn.

The Warendorf district is responsible for the museum. The museum wants to give an insight into the culture and art of the district from the Middle Ages to the present day. The combination of traditional art with modern art by young artists from the region is what makes the museum so attractive.

Entry is free. The museum is accessible to the disabled .

history

The Liesborn Abbey Museum was founded in 1966 with only two rooms as an exhibition space. In the course of time, the museum developed to occupy all rooms of the abbey with an area of 2,500 m². Nevertheless, due to the constant growth of the exhibits, the collections could only be presented in a restricted and cramped manner. As part of REGIONALE 2004, an expansion of the museum to 3,000 m² was planned and inaugurated on July 10, 2004.

The Liesborn Abbey Museum is now one of the most important museums in the Münsterland and the largest in the Warendorf district. With around 20,000 visitors a year, the museum is among the top 25 percent of the most visited museums in Germany.

Elisabeth Schwarm , who had previously worked at the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden , took over the management of the museum from Bennie Hugh Priddy on June 1, 2012 , who had held this position for 25 years.

The architect was Dieter Georg Baumewerd . The Liesborn Abbey Museum received the Good Buildings Award 2006/2007 (BDA Münster - Münsterland) and Exemplary Buildings in North Rhine-Westphalia 2005 (State of North Rhine-Westphalia / Chamber of Architects North Rhine-Westphalia ).
