Augustin Wibbelt (born September 19, 1862 in Vorhelm , today part of Ahlen ; † September 14, 1947 ibid) was a German Roman Catholic clergyman and Westphalian dialect poet and writer ( Münsterländer Platt ).

Life

Augustin Wibbelt was born on September 19, 1862 on the Wibbelthof in Vorhelm, a farming village east of Ahlen, the seventh of ten children. At the age of twelve, his father sent him to the vicar's Latin school in neighboring Enniger for three years . In 1878 he entered the upper secondary school at the Carolinum grammar school in Osnabrück . Because of his excellent high school diploma thesis, he was waived the oral exam in 1883. He was allowed to give the Abitur speech, which was also reported in the newspaper: Wibbelt should improve his pronunciation, since you can still hear too much about his origins from Münsterland .

In 1883 Wibbelt began studying philology in Münster , where he became a member of the Catholic student union Unitas Frisia in the summer semester. But in the second semester he felt called to become a priest . His father only allowed him to do so on condition that Augustine had previously served in the military for a year . In the autumn of 1884 he reported to Freiburg im Breisgau , where he began to write Low German verses, inspired by the Alemannic poems by Johann Peter Hebels .

Back in Münster, Wibbelt continued his theology studies and entered the local seminary at Easter 1887. After his ordination on May 26, 1888, he was assigned a chaplaincy in Moers on the Lower Rhine. At the end of 1890 the young priest was transferred back to Münster, where he worked as vicar at St. Martini . From 1891 Wibbelt published Low German contributions: for the weekly Ludgerus-Blatt , he wrote a total of 132 humorous dialogues and stories in Münsterland Platt in addition to numerous articles on ideological topics in High German up to 1896 . He awakened figures like Drüke-Möhne or Vader Klüngelkamp to literary life.

Augustin Wibbelt was transferred to Oedt on the Lower Rhine at the end of 1896 . Two years later he was chaplain in the parish of St. Joseph in Duisburg . During this time he published the first of his stories in book form and a doctorate in Tübingen about Joseph von Gorres as a literary historian Dr. phil.

At his own request, Wibbelt was appointed head of the small parish of Mehr bei Kleve , to which he was introduced on November 7, 1906. He worked here for almost thirty years until he retired in May 1935 and returned to his parents' farm in Vorhelm. Wibbelt, who received the Annette von Droste Prize from the Province of Westphalia in 1946 for his poetic work , died on September 14, 1947 in Vorhelm. He was initially buried in the local cemetery, but in 1950 he was laid to rest in his own small chapel in the courtyard. Since then this has been called the Augustin Wibbelt Chapel.

Wibbelt's novels , numerous publications in magazines and his standard German publications reached a large audience in the first half of the 20th century. He had a formative effect on many other Low German authors, such as Werner Heukamp and Rainer Schepper .

The collection of poems Maten-Gaitlink (High German Märzamsel ) is considered to be his most important work. Schoolchildren who have long since ceased to speak Low German will learn his poem Dat Pöggsken (The Little Frog) by heart into the 21st century . The Vorhelmer Heimatverein created a memorial to this poem with the Pöggsken sculpture on Hellbach . Numerous streets are named after him, especially in places in the Münsterland, but also the Augustin-Wibbelt-Gymnasium in Warendorf and the Augustin-Wibbelt-Schule in Vorhelm, Wadersloh and Münster-Roxel . In Vorhelm you can also follow the poet's footsteps on an Augustin Wibbelt bike tour.

In 1981 Anne Aulike, niece and heiress Wibbelts, bequeathed his estate to the Warendorf district . Some pieces from this estate, including furniture and furnishings, are on display in the Liesborn Abbey Museum.
