Oedt in the area of Grefrath in the district of Viersen

The formerly independent municipality of Oedt , now part of the municipality of Grefrath , is located on the Lower Rhine in the west of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and is a municipality in the district of Viersen in the administrative district of Düsseldorf .

history

Oedt, Hochstrasse

Archaeological finds from the Younger Stone Age and the Iron Age as well as finds from the Roman and Franconian times on the entire area of the old community of Oedt allow the conclusion that this was made arable and settled at an early stage. In the 1920s , Albert Steeger collected finds from a sand pit north of Mulhouse , which testify to a settlement and a Franconian burial ground in the 7th century.

In the middle of the 10th century, the land came into the possession of the Archdiocese of Cologne and thus received a sovereign ruler for the first time. In 973 Archbishop Gero of Cologne donated the Oedter Land to the Benedictine Abbey of Gladbach .

In 1170 Oedt is first mentioned as "Hude". In a deed of gift from Abbot Robert von Gladbach it says u. a .: "apud Hude in ecclesia Nostra", d. H. "In our church in Oedt". The place name Hude changed over the centuries via Ude, Uda, Uede, Oyde, Uedde, Oidt, Oed to today's Oedt.

Dietrich Luf III built around 1300 . von Kleve , Count von Hülchrath and Herr von Kervenheim und Oedt, the landmark of the place, of which only one of the round towers (rebuilt) still stands today: Uda Castle . The castle was destroyed several times over the centuries, but was always partially rebuilt. In 1757 the castle complex was finally destroyed by French troops. Only the round main tower still standing today has been preserved.

In 1794 Oedt, like the entire Rhineland , came under French rule, belonged to the Rur department and formed an independent Mairie in the canton of Kempen , Arrondissement de Crévelt . Four years later, was Honnschaft separated sub Broich by the Office Oedt and under the name Clörath after Neersen , today City Willich , incorporated. After the Congress of Vienna in 1815, Oedt came to the Kingdom of Prussia .

As part of the municipal reorganization , the district of Hagen was separated on January 1, 1970 and incorporated into the city of Viersen. The remaining municipality of Oedt lost its independence and became part of the municipality of Grefrath.

economy

Economic history

The weaving trade in Oedt has been documented since the 17th century. In 1850 the Peter Mertes company was founded as a blue dyeing and work clothing factory. Johannes Girmes founded the company Johannes Girmes & Co. , Oedt on November 10th, 1879 . His brothers August and Dietrich later became partners in this company. When electrical lighting was introduced in Oedt in 1899, the Girmes company had the Oedter hospital connected to the lighting at its own expense. The two textile factories shaped the townscape, formed the dominant part of economic life and thus local history for many decades.

Economy today

Not much is left of the once flourishing textile industry in Oedt. After the bankruptcy of the Girmes textile factory and the sale to the French company Tissavel, the textile machines in Oedt were dismantled and transported away. The partially listed buildings (which were built by the company PH Schmitz & Cie. Around 1900), u. a. the Grefrath water tower are mostly empty.

The streets of Oedter are characterized by vacant shops. Where there was a lot of sales from the 19th century to the 1980s, there is significantly less retail today.
