Theodor Franz Clemens Mooren (born April 20, 1833 in Oedt ; † August 29, 1906 in Bad Wildungen ) was Lord Mayor of Eupen and a member of the German Reichstag and the Prussian House of Representatives.

Life

Mooren attended a high school in Cologne and studied law. In 1860 he became mayor of his home town Oedt as the successor to his late father. From 1869 to 1876 he was also mayor of Schmalbroich and the district town of Kempen . In Kempen he made a special contribution to the establishment of a Reich telegraph station, the abolition of school fees, the establishment of the volunteer fire brigade and the regulation of the city moat and the construction of the promenade. The Moorenring in Kempen is still named after him today. In 1877 he was removed from office as a victim of the Kulturkampf and dismissed from administrative service by state ministerial decision of April 25, 1878, and finally rehabilitated in 1881 by appointment as the successor of the mayor of the industrial city of Eupen , Peter Becker , who had resigned for health reasons . In 1904 he was awarded the title of Lord Mayor by Kaiser Wilhelm II. He held this office until 1905. He made a name for himself in Eupen through his efforts to beautify and green the townscape and to provide the city with water. The moors and a street there are named after him.

For Kempen and Eupen he was always a member of the district council. From 1867 to 1870 he was a member of the Prussian House of Representatives for the Kempen-Geldern constituency, and from 1879 to 1905 for the Bergheim (Erft) , Euskirchen and Cologne-Land districts . and from 1887 to 1898 the German Reichstag for the city of Aachen and the German Center Party . Mooren bequeathed his possessions in his hometown of Oedt to the Cologne high school and foundation fund for the establishment of a study foundation that still exists today.
