Uda Castle

The castle Uda is the ruins of a medieval castle in the district Oedt the municipality Grefrath at the Lower Rhine .

history

The castle was built around 1300 by Dietrich Luf III. von Kleve , Count von Hülchrath and Lord of Kervenheim and Oedt. In 1348/49 it served the Cologne elector Walram von Jülich as a defense against the duchies of Jülich and Geldern . In 1560 extensive repairs were carried out by Johann von Brempt . In 1643, following the battle on the Kempener Heide, it was incapable of defense due to fire and demolition by Hessian troops and from then on served as the office of Oedt before it was demolished by the French in 1757. In 1959 and 1961 excavations were carried out on the castle.

Today only one of the round towers, the foundations and remains of the masonry are preserved. The castle complex near the Niers is a landmark of Oedt and serves as an event location.
