history
The history of the old moated castle can be traced back to 1326. The castle is a typical example of an aristocratic residence in the Lower Rhine region from the time before the Thirty Years War . In the 14th century the Lords of Wachtendonk ruled here .
The castle got its present form around 1630, when the medieval fortified castle was converted into a baroque manor . Before and after that, the house often changed hands as a fiefdom of the Duchy of Geldern , until it finally passed into non-aristocratic, peasant ownership around 1800.
The north wing was badly damaged in the Second World War , but was rebuilt around 1970 when the complex was taken over by the Viersen district and converted into a museum.
Today the Dorenburg lies in the middle of the museum grounds. In the castle building itself you can see exhibits on the civil and aristocratic living culture of the Lower Rhine; On the upper floor, special exhibitions on folklore topics with regional references are shown.
