House Clörath was a border fortification of the Archdiocese of Cologne on the Niers about 3 km east of Viersen . The river formed the border between Kurköln , the Duchy of Jülich and the city of Viersen , which belonged to the Duchy of Geldern as an exclave , until the re-division under French administration around 1800 .

The fortified house was first mentioned in 1230. A farm yard with a water mill and an oil mill ( see Clörath Mill ) belonged to the complex, some of which is still preserved today. House Clörath was a three-story mansion surrounded by a moat with a turret and roof turret. It was destroyed in 1794 in the turmoil of the French occupation. Only ruinous foundation walls have been preserved, which are visible in the meadows behind the water mill.

The owners of Haus Clörath included the families von Clörland, von Brempt, von Büren, von Brienen, von Linden zu Blitterswick, the Counts of Virmond , the Archbishops of Cologne Clemens August I of Bavaria , Maximilian Friedrich von Königsegg-Rothenfels , Maximilian von Austria as well as the barons of Twickel.
