The Lower Rhine Open-Air Museum is a folklore open-air museum for rural and artisanal culture in the central Lower Rhine . Various buildings from the region were built on the approximately 4 hectare site around the Dorenburg in Grefrath . As a special feature, the Niederrheinisches Freilichtmuseum also has the toy museum .

The Dorenburg lies in the middle of the museum grounds. In the castle building itself you can see exhibits on the civil and aristocratic living culture of the Lower Rhine; On the upper floor, special exhibitions on folklore topics with regional references are shown.

Farm equipment and crafts

Around the castle there are various buildings from the region that have been rebuilt in the open-air museum:

  • Spenneshof farm from Hagen ( Viersen - Süchteln ) with flax - Darre : Here there are exhibitions on pottery and stoneware, the manufacture of bricks and exhibitions on various woodworking trades (wheelmaker, carpenter, cooper, ...).
  • Korn - distillery with apparatus of the distillery Vallen heirs of Straelen from around 1910
  • Tannery Bremer from Moers : Here the transition of the tannery from craft to industrial production with the machines and equipment from the 1960s is shown. There are also other leather-processing crafts such as shoemakers and saddlers.
  • Fire brigade spray house from St. Hubert from 1779 with fire engines

Guided tours through the museum grounds are offered, and special events take place again and again. Interested parties can, for example, experience bread baking in the old stone oven or learn about old craftsmanship in word and deed . As regular events that are draft horses -meeting on May 1, and the vintage car - tractor meeting established on the last Sunday in September.

Events

Every May 1st, the Lower Rhine Open Air Museum invites all draft horse enthusiasts (with their horses) as well as riders and drivers with horses of other breeds to a “Mairitt”. Many come in historical costumes.

On the last Sunday of September takes place in the Lower Rhine open-air museum, a "tractor meeting" with vintage cars - tractors instead.

On the first and second weekend in Advent (Friday to Sunday) the museum grounds host a “Romantic Christmas Market”. Around 100 artists, artisans and designers exclusively offer self-made, high-quality unique items .
