Süchteln is a district of the district town of Viersen in the district of the same name in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia .
The Catholic parish church of St. Clemens, built in 1856, forms the center of the old weaving town . Its 73 m high tower dates from 1481.
history
Süchteln is first mentioned as a place in 1116 in books from the St. Pantaleon Abbey in Cologne . The naming of "Süchteln" and his "Heiligenberg" shows traces of the Celtic Menapier . The report of the chronicler Hugo Doergens gives the following information: The Heiligenberg, which lies with Süchteln, refers to the pre-Christian worship of a goddess "Heel". The name Süchteln, handed down in Middle High German as Suthele, Suphtele, also refers to it. Suht, Suft means addiction, infirmity, disease in ancient Gothic. The name of the goddess Heel can be found here in the second syllable. Hele, old Gothic heiljan or helian, corresponds to our word for "heal".
After Süchteln was assigned to the Duchy of Jülich in the late Middle Ages , the place received market rights in 1423 . Süchteln has had city rights since 1405 . In 2005 they celebrated “600 years of city rights addicts”. The original document with the Süchtelner seal is in the National Archives in Paris.
From the late 19th century to the late 1950s, Süchteln was a flourishing city in the weaving industry .
British and American bomber associations dropped few bombs on addicts during World War II. On March 1, 1945 soldiers of the 84th US Infantry Division from Dülken captured Süchteln against low resistance.
In the course of the regional reform in North Rhine-Westphalia on January 1, 1970, Süchteln, Viersen, Dülken and Boisheim became the town of Viersen. (See also the law on the reorganization of the Kempen-Krefeld district and the independent city of Viersen ).
As a local saint Irmgard is venerated by addicts ; including during the Irmgardisoktav , which takes place annually on the Heiligenberg , part of the Süchtelner heights .
Süchteln also includes the smaller districts of Clörath , Dornbusch , Hagen , Hagenbroich , Sittard and Süchteln-Vorst .
