The Irmgardiskapelle is a chapel in the Süchtelner Heights in the Süchteln district of Viersen in North Rhine-Westphalia . The place where the chapel stands is called Heiligenberg .

history

There is evidence that a small church stood there from 1498, which was completely destroyed by 1589. In 1664, today's chapel was built in honor of the patron saint Irmgard von Süchteln . The abbot of the Benedictine monastery of St. Pantaleon in Cologne , who also donated an altar in 1681, is considered to be the builder .

Irmgardis fountain

The Irmgardisbrunnen ( Irmgardis-Pöttsche ) is located on the southern slope behind the chapel . It is provided with a small gate, forged in 1948, on which the cross, heart and anchor can be seen as symbols of the three divine virtues of faith, love and hope.

Irmgardisoktav, Irmgardis pilgrimage and Irmgardis path

The Irmgardisoktav is celebrated in September of each year, in the week after or from September 4th (the saint's name day) . At the beginning of the octave, a procession moves to the Heiligenberg, where an extended service takes place in the forest in front of the chapel. For the 500th anniversary of the Irmgardis pilgrimage in 1998, the Archbishop of Cologne and Cardinal Joachim Meisner was a guest. In 2006 and 2009, Bishop Heinrich Mussinghoff visited the Irmgardisoktav.

The Irmgardiskapelle is also the start and finish point of the Irmgardis path, a path intended as a hiking and pilgrim path for cyclists and pedestrians, which leads from the Irmgardiskapelle to the Helenenbrunnen in Helenabrunn within the Viersen urban area .
