Heinrich Mussinghoff (born October 29, 1940 in Osterwick ) is a Roman Catholic clergyman and emeritus bishop of Aachen .

Life

Mussinghoff studied philosophy and Catholic theology in Münster and Freiburg im Breisgau . He was ordained a deacon on March 4, 1967 . On 29 June 1968 he received through the Münster Bishop Joseph Hoffner , the ordination . From 1971 to 1976 he was Bishop Heinrich Tenhumberg's secretary . He received his doctorate in 1978 on the subject of theological faculties in the field of tension between state and church after the Prussian Concordat .

From 1980 Mussinghoff belonged to the Münster cathedral chapter . From 1981 to 1995 he was the official head of the Ecclesiastical Court in Münster, after completing his canon law studies at the Gregorian University in Rome. In 1990 he became provost of the cathedral in Münster.

After Klaus Hemmerle , the bishop of Aachen , died on January 23, 1994 , Pope John Paul II appointed Mussinghoff bishop of Aachen on December 12, 1994. Joachim Cardinal Meisner donated him the episcopal ordination on February 11, 1995 ; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Münster, Reinhard Lettmann and the Aachen auxiliary bishop Gerd Dicke . His motto is Parate viam Domini ("Prepare the way of the Lord").

In 1998 he was appointed Grand Officer of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem by Cardinal Grand Master Carlo Cardinal Furno and invested in Mainz Cathedral on May 9, 1998 by Anton Schlembach , Grand Prior of the German Lieutenancy . Mussinghoff was also Prior of the Rhenish-Westphalian Order Province of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem until 2016 ; In 2016 the Archbishop of Paderborn, Hans-Josef Becker, became his successor. In 2015 he headed the investiture of the German Lieutenancy in Mainz.

From 1999 to 2011 he was deputy chairman of the German Bishops' Conference . Since 2006, Mussinghoff has been chairman of the sub-commission of Judaism in the ecumenical commission of the German Bishops' Conference, and he was also a member of the Evangelical-Catholic Contact Discussion Group.

Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation on December 8, 2015.
