Heinrich Tenhumberg (born June 4, 1915 in Lünten near Vreden ; † September 16, 1979 in Münster ) was a Roman Catholic clergyman and from 1969 to 1979 Bishop of Münster .

Life

He has been associated with the Schoenstatt Movement since he was a student . In 1936 he joined the academic Catholic student association Unitas -Eckhardia Freiburg. Heinrich Tenhumberg was ordained a priest on September 23, 1939 . From 1947 he was a member of the Schoenstatt Institute for Diocesan Priests .

On May 28, 1958, Pope Pius XII appointed him . as titular bishop of Thuburnica and auxiliary bishop in Münster. He was ordained a bishop on July 20, 1958, by the Bishop of Münster, Michael Keller . Co- consecrators were auxiliary bishop Heinrich Baaken and the bishop of Essen , Franz Hengsbach .

Heinrich Tenhumberg took part in all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council in Rome as a council father .

After Bishop Joseph Höffner was transferred to Cologne as coadjutor of Cardinal Josef Frings on January 6, 1969 , the cathedral chapter elected auxiliary bishop Tenhumberg as his successor. On July 7, 1969, the papal confirmation by Pope Paul VI followed. , on September 14, 1969 the inauguration.

From 1966 to 1969 Tenhumberg headed the Catholic Office in Bonn, the representation of the German bishops at the Bundestag and the federal government.

Bishop Tenhumberg adapted his diocese to the post-conciliar requirements and in 1973 divided it into regions, each of which was assigned an auxiliary bishop as regional bishop.

Tenhumberg's pastoral focus was on industrial pastoral care in Marl and pastoral care for refugees after the Second World War , the coordination of the lay apostolate and the leadership of the Catholic rural youth .

Tenhumberg's decision in 1975 to withdraw the church teaching permit from Horst Herrmann , then Münster professor of theology, was publicly controversial . this was the first case of this kind in the Federal Republic of Germany. [4]

Tenhumberg died after a serious illness on September 16, 1979 and was buried in the bishop's crypt in the west choir of the cathedral. Reinhard Lettmann was his successor in 1980 .

Bishop Heinrich Tenhumberg Foundation

In 1980 the Bischof-Heinrich-Tenhumberg-Foundation named after him was founded, the purpose of which is to support families and single parents in economic and social emergencies.
