Carlo Furno
Carlo Cardinal Furno (born December 2, 1921 in Bairo Canavese , Province of Turin , Kingdom of Italy , † December 9, 2015 in Rome ) was a diplomat of the Holy See and Cardinal Curia of the Roman Catholic Church . From 1995 to 2007 he was Cardinal Grand Master of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .
Life
Carlo Furno grew up in Aglié Canavese in the province of Turin. After primary school in Aglié he attended the small seminary in Ivrea and from 1938 studied philosophy and Catholic theology at the diocesan seminary in Ivrea . During the Second World War on June 25, 1944, he received the sacrament of ordination in Ivrea . He then worked for three years as a chaplain in Ozegna in the diocese of Ivrea , before he was released for further studies. In 1948/49 he studied theology at the Pontifical Athenaeum of the Salesians in Turin . At the Pontifical Roman Seminary in Rome, he was in 1953 after studying canon law and the civil law for Doctor of Laws (Dr. iur. Utr.) PhD.
At the same time, he completed training at the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy from 1951 to 1953 and entered the diplomatic service of the Vatican . He was attaché and secretary of the Apostolic Nunciature in Colombia (1953/57) and Ecuador (1954/57) and secretary of the Apostolic Delegation in Jerusalem (1957/62). From 1962 to 1973 Carlo Furno worked in the First Section of the Vatican State Secretariat in Rome and from 1966 was also a lecturer at the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy.
On August 1, 1973, Pope Paul VI appointed him . the Titular Archbishop of Abari and Apostolic Nuncio in Peru . The episcopal ordination received Carlo Furno on 16 September of that year by Cardinal Paolo Bertoli ; Co- consecrators were Archbishop Agostino Casaroli and the Bishop of his home diocese Ivrea , Luigi Bettazzi . His episcopal motto was Ardere et lucere ("Burn and shine").
From 1978 to 1982 he was Apostolic Nuncio in Lebanon , from 1982 to 1992 he carried out the same task in Brazil . In 1992 he became Apostolic Nuncio in Italy.
Pope John Paul II accepted him on November 26, 1994 as a cardinal deacon with the titular diaconia Sacro Cuore di Cristo Re in the college of cardinals and made him head of papal delegations on several occasions.
Carlo Cardinal Furno was appointed Cardinal Grand Master of the Knightly Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem by Pope John Paul II on December 21, 1995.
From June 6, 1996 to November 1998, he was papal delegate for the Basilica of San Francesco of Assisi. In 1997 he was appointed archpriest of the Patriarchal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore . On February 24, 2005 he was initially appointed cardinal priest while retaining his title diakonia , which was pro hac vice elevated to title church . In 2006 he finally opted for the titular church of Sant'Onofrio at the administrative seat of the Knightly Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. Furno held the office of archpriest until his age-related retirement in 2004. Pope Benedict XVI accepted his resignation as Cardinal Grand Master of the Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem . on June 27, 2007.
At the conclave in 2005 and at the conclave in 2013 , he did not participate because he had exceeded the age limit of 80 years.
Carlo Furno died on December 9, 2015 in Rome and was buried in the Patriarchal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore .
