Paolo Bertoli
Paolo Cardinal Bertoli (born February 1, 1908 in Poggio (part of the municipality of Camporgiano ), Province of Lucca , † November 8, 2001 in Rome ) was a papal diplomat and cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church . From 1979 to 1985 he was Cardinal Chamberlain of the Roman Church .
Life
Bertoli first studied in Lucca , then at the Pontifical Roman Seminary in Rome. After completing his studies, he received the sacrament of ordination on August 15, 1930 in Lucca . As early as 1933 he became the first speaker, then secretary of the Apostolic Nunciature in Belgrade under Nuncio Ermenegildo Pellegrinetti . During the Second World War he worked first in the nunciature in Paris , then in 1942 in that of Haiti . In 1946 he moved to Bern , Switzerland , where he took part in numerous international conferences to study the problems of war refugees . In 1948 he also took part in the international conference of the Red Cross in Stockholm and represented the Holy See at the conference on the revision of the Geneva Conventions . In the spring of 1949 he was supposed to move to the Nunciature of Prague , but this failed due to the resistance of the Czechoslovak government.
On March 24, 1952, Pope Pius XII appointed him . the titular of Nicomedia and apostolic delegate to Turkey . He received his episcopal ordination from Eugène Cardinal Tisserant on May 11th of the same year; Co-consecrators were the Curia Archbishops Valerio Valeri and Filippo Bernardini . Just one year later, on May 7, 1953, he was appointed Apostolic Nuncio in Colombia , then on April 15, 1959 in Lebanon and on April 16, 1960 in France . From 1962 to 1965 he took part in the Second Vatican Council .
From Pope Paul VI. In the consistory of April 28, 1969 , he was admitted to the College of Cardinals as a cardinal deacon with the title deaconry San Girolamo della Carità , on May 7, 1969, he was appointed cardinal prefect of the simultaneously reorganized Congregation for the Causes of the Canons , which he did until March 1 1973 stayed. On March 5, 1973 he was elevated to cardinal priest of the titular church of San Girolamo dei Croati . In 1976 he was appointed by Pope Paul VI. sent back to Lebanon during the bloody crisis there.
In August 1978 he took part in the conclave that John Paul I elected, and finally two months later in the October 1978 conclave , from which John Paul II emerged as Pope. From January 27 to February 13, 1979, Cardinal Bertoli attended the Third General Conference of the Latin American Episcopate in Puebla . John Paul II appointed him Cardinal Chamberlain of the Catholic Church on May 5, 1979 , which resulted in an elevation to Cardinal Bishop of Frascati on June 30, 1979 . As such, on December 24th, at the opening of the extraordinary Holy Year, he was also papal legate for the opening of the Holy Door of the Patriarchal Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls . He remained Camerlengo until March 25, 1985.
Paolo Bertoli died on November 8, 2001 at the age of 93. He was buried in his native Poggio.
