Paolo Cardinal Marella (born January 25, 1895 in Rome , Italy ; † October 15, 1984 ibid) was a Vatican diplomat and later a Curia Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Paolo Marella studied in Rome the subjects philosophy and Catholic theology and received on 23 February 1918, when Cardinal Vicar Basilio Pompili the sacrament of Holy Orders . After further studies and activities as a pastor in Rome, he joined the Congregation De Propaganda Fide in 1922 . From 1924 to 1933 he was a member of the staff of the Apostolic Delegation in the USA, first as an auditor and later as a Chargé d'affaires . On April 5, 1933, he was bestowed the title of House Prelate of His Holiness .

Pope Pius XI appointed him on September 15, 1933 Titular Archbishop of Doclea and Apostolic Delegate in Japan . He was ordained bishop by the Prefect of the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith , Cardinal Pietro Fumasoni Biondi , co- consecrators were Carlo Salotti , Secretary of the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith, and Archbishop Domenico Spolverini . Paolo Marella was the Apostolic Delegate from 1948 to 1953 in Australia , New Zealand and Oceania . In 1953 Pope Pius XII appointed him . to the Apostolic Nuncio in France .

Pope John XXIII Paolo Marella took on December 14, 1959 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Sant'Andrea delle Fratte in the college of cardinals . He took part in the Second Vatican Council from 1962 to 1965 and represented the Pope at several celebrations as the papal legate in the following years . From 1964 to 1973 he was President of the Pontifical Council for Non-Christians . Paul VI appointed him on March 15, 1972 . the cardinal bishop of Porto and Santa Rufina . As early as 1961 he had been appointed Prefect of the Vatican Basilica and after the redesign and renaming of this office by Paul VI. Marella was appointed president of the cathedral building works in Sankt Peter in 1967. He resigned from this office on February 8, 1983 at the age of 88.

Paolo Marella died in Rome on October 15, 1984 and was buried in the Campo Verano cemetery.
