Alfonso Cardinal López Trujillo (born November 8, 1935 in Villahermosa , Colombia , † April 19, 2008 in Rome ) was Archbishop of Medellín and Curia Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Alfonso López Trujillo studied Catholic theology , philosophy , sociology and political science in Bogotá and Rome. In 1960 he became a doctor of philosophy doctorate and received in Rome the sacrament of Holy Orders . He then studied for another two years in Rome before he worked as a philosophy lecturer at the Bogotá seminary from 1962 to 1966 . From 1968 to 1970 he worked in the training of priests, from 1970 to 1972, as vicar general, he was responsible for the development of the newly established pastoral department of the Archdiocese of Bogotá.

In 1971 he was appointed by Pope Paul VI. appointed titular archbishop of Boseta and auxiliary bishop in Bogotá. In 2001 he was appointed Cardinal Bishop of Frascati by John Paul II . After the death of Pope John Paul II, he resigned all offices in the Roman Curia , as provided for in canon law . He participated in the 2005 conclave , in which Pope Benedict XVI. was chosen to participate. This confirmed him in his offices in the Roman Curia.

Cardinal López Trujillo died on April 19, 2008 of complications from his diabetes .

In his book "In the closet of the Vatican", Frédéric Martel explains that Trujillo abused his position as archbishop to force young seminarians into sexual acts. Contrary to his public work and appearance, he himself visited homosexual prostitutes. His homosexuality was also widely known in the clergy.

Act

López Trujillo has been charged with spreading misinformation on AIDS prevention in third world countries. In an interview with BBC television , he said condoms contained holes through which the HIV virus could easily get through. He called on health authorities to warn of the dangers of condoms in the same way as is customary with cigarettes . His extensive treatise Family Values ​​Versus Safe Sex is available on the Vatican website. Trujillo describes the health risks that arise from the unreflective use of condoms during safe sex , and the attitude that the Catholic Church suggests to people to prevent venereal diseases .

The cardinal was also criticized in western industrialized countries for opposing the rights of homosexual couples. He justified this with reference to the preservation of the family as an institution.

López Trujillo was also involved in the bioethics discussion . To this end, he published the book The Family and Human Reproduction in 2006 .

Trujillo is held responsible for blocking the beatification of Oscar Romero until his death .
